Installing kitchen cabinets in Massachusetts, Connecticut or Rhode Island costs $125 to $225 per standard cabinet in 2026 for IKEA cabinets, assembled and installed. A typical 10x10 kitchen has about 20 cabinets, so installation runs $2,500 to $4,500. Tall pantry units, corner units and islands are priced as extra lines, and removal, countertops, appliances and backsplash are separate jobs you can add or leave out.
Those are our own published rates. Where a job lands between $125 and $225 depends far more on the building than on the town: a third-floor walk-up with plaster walls in Somerville costs more per cabinet than a ranch with a driveway in Warwick. Below is the full price list, how per-cabinet pricing compares with per-foot quotes, what is and isn't included, how prices shift across New England, and three worked examples.
Installation cost per cabinet
| What's being installed | Typical 2026 price | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Standard base or wall cabinet | $125–$225 each | Assembly, rail or wall mounting, leveling, doors, drawers, hinges and adjustment |
| Tall pantry or oven unit | add $75–$150 each | Heavier, more parts, needs a plumb wall and usually a scribed cover panel |
| Corner unit | add $100–$200 each | Carousel or blind-corner hardware; spacing affects the cabinets on both sides |
| Island or peninsula | add $300–$1,200 | Cover panels on every visible side, floor anchoring and overhang support |
| Stacked wall cabinets to the ceiling | 4–6 more cabinets and about a day | A second row, a second rail and more finishing at the ceiling |
| Assembly only, no mounting | $50–$100 each | Boxes built and left for you or another contractor to hang |
For most kitchens the cabinet count is the price. Our cost calculator turns a cabinet count into a first estimate, and our assembly vs. installation cost guide explains the assembly-only option.
Per cabinet or per linear foot?
Many cost guides quote cabinet installation by the linear foot. HomeAdvisor's cabinet installation cost guide puts labor alone at $50 to $400 per linear foot, depending on the type of cabinet, and notes that the average kitchen has about 24 linear feet of cabinets. Fully installed with the cabinets themselves, it lists roughly $100–$300 per linear foot for stock cabinets, $150–$650 for semi-custom and up to $1,200 for custom.
A 10x10 L-shaped kitchen has about 20 feet of cabinet run, with base and wall cabinets along both walls, and about 20 cabinets. At $2,500–$4,500 for installation, our pricing works out to roughly $125–$225 per linear foot of run, assembly included. We price per cabinet because it maps line for line onto the IKEA item list, so you can check every number on the quote against your own order.
IKEA flat-pack vs. pre-assembled cabinets
IKEA SEKTION cabinets arrive flat, which is part of why they cost less: a 10x10 set of cabinets, doors and drawers runs about $2,500–$3,500 with entry-level fronts such as VEDDINGE, $3,500–$5,000 with AXSTAD or BODBYN, and $5,000–$6,500 with upper-tier fronts such as LERHYTTAN or VOXTORP. Every box is assembled on site, hung from a steel suspension rail and set on adjustable legs, then finished with fillers, cover panels and toe kicks. Assembly is built into our per-cabinet price.
Stock and semi-custom cabinets from other brands arrive as finished boxes and are screwed through the back into the wall studs. Installers price them differently, usually by the foot. We install IKEA kitchens only, so the prices in this guide are for IKEA cabinets; the national per-foot ranges above are the fair comparison for other brands.

Base cabinets going in
Wall cabinets already hung while the base boxes and a drawer unit go onto the rail, packaging still on the floor. This is the stage the per-cabinet price pays for.
How installation prices change across New England
The rate is the same everywhere we work. What moves a job within it is access, walls and floors, and those follow the housing stock.
| Area | What usually drives the price | Where jobs tend to land |
|---|---|---|
| Boston, Cambridge, Somerville | Walk-ups, plaster and brick walls, parking permits, condo building rules | Upper half of $125–$225 |
| Newton and Brookline, Framingham, Quincy and the South Shore | Driveways, a mix of older colonials and newer houses, bigger plans with islands | Middle |
| Worcester, Lowell, Springfield | Three-deckers and older multi-families, sloping floors | Middle to upper |
| Cape Cod | Distance from IKEA Stoughton, low-ceilinged Capes, second-home logistics | Middle; any travel cost itemized |
| Greenwich, Stamford, Norwalk | More tall units and islands, long runs on old floors, condo elevator windows | Middle to upper, set by plan size |
| New Haven, Hartford | Two-, three- and six-family houses, plaster, stairs | Middle to upper |
| Providence, Woonsocket | Triple-deckers, plaster, chimney chases, third-floor carries | Upper half |
| Warwick and Cranston, South County | Ranches and colonials with driveways and drywall | Lower to middle |
| Newport | Old framing, short walls, narrow streets | Upper half |

Three worked examples
These are illustrations built from our published rates, not quotes for real jobs. They show how the lines add up.
Example 1: third-floor galley in a Somerville triple-decker
Plaster walls, a sloping floor and every carton carried up two flights put this one at the top rate.
- 14 standard cabinets at $225: $3,150
- 1 tall pantry unit: $75–$150
- Installation total: $3,225–$3,300
Example 2: L-shaped kitchen in a Framingham colonial
Drywall, a level floor and a driveway at the door keep the rate low.
- 18 standard cabinets at $150: $2,700
- 2 tall units: $150–$300
- 1 corner unit: $100–$200
- Installation total: $2,950–$3,200
Example 3: large Greenwich kitchen with an island
Long runs on an old floor need shimming and scribing, so the rate sits in the middle of the range, and the plan carries more of the extra-cost units.
- 26 standard cabinets at $175: $4,550
- 3 tall units: $225–$450
- 2 corner units: $200–$400
- 1 island: $300–$1,200
- Installation total: $5,275–$6,600
Removal, countertop work, appliances and backsplash would be added to each as their own lines. In the Greenwich example, lead-safe removal of a painted pre-1978 kitchen would push the removal line toward the top of its $500–$1,500 range.

Wall cabinets hung and the range set in its opening while drawer boxes go into the base run. Tall units and drawers take longer than a plain door cabinet, which is why they carry their own lines.
Ways to keep the installation cost down
- Get the plan checked before you order. A missing filler or cover panel costs a return trip and often a second visit. Our plan review is free.
- Order everything at once, including legs, toe kicks, rail, hinges and handles, so install day doesn't stop for a part.
- Have the room empty and the trades booked. A crew waiting on a plumber or a cleared counter is time you pay for.
- Assemble the boxes yourself only if you are careful. A hybrid job, where you assemble and a pro installs, costs roughly a third less than full installation, but you own any assembly mistakes, and IKEA's own installation service won't install self-assembled cabinets.
- Keep the layout. Moving the sink or range adds plumbing and electrical work, and often permits, on top of the cabinets.
Our full cost breakdown covers the whole kitchen budget beyond installation.

Frequently asked questions
For IKEA cabinets, installation in Massachusetts costs $125–$225 per standard cabinet in 2026, with assembly included. A 10x10 kitchen of about 20 cabinets runs about $2,500–$4,500. Tall units add $75–$150 each, corner units $100–$200 and an island $300–$1,200. The same rates apply in Connecticut and Rhode Island.
Both are common. National cost guides such as HomeAdvisor quote labor at $50–$400 per linear foot depending on the cabinet type. We price IKEA kitchens per cabinet because it matches the IKEA item list line for line; on a 10x10 kitchen it works out to roughly $125–$225 per linear foot of run.
At the time of writing, IKEA prices its own installation service from the cost of your kitchen; its own example is an average kitchen of about $5,500 with installation around $2,500. Its terms exclude removing the old kitchen and installing cabinets you assembled yourself, so check the current terms before choosing.
No. Laminate and butcher-block tops can be cut and fitted on site as part of the job, but countertop templating and installation is a separate line, typically $500–$1,000, with the material priced on its own. Quartz and granite are templated after the cabinets are set and take one to two weeks to fabricate.
One to two days for a small galley, three to four days for a typical L- or U-shaped kitchen, and five to seven days for a large kitchen with an island and a pantry wall. Add about a day if the old kitchen has to be removed first.
Usually by roughly a third of the installation cost. The trade-off is that you own any assembly mistakes, and an out-of-square box never lets its door hang straight. IKEA's own installation service also won't install cabinets you assembled yourself.
