A mid-range IKEA kitchen remodel in Connecticut, a 10x10 kitchen with popular doors, a quartz countertop and professional installation, usually costs $11,000 to $16,000 before appliances. Value builds start around $7,000 and premium builds reach about $24,000. Installation labor is $2,500 to $4,500 of that, at $125 to $225 per cabinet.
The cabinets cost the same in Greenwich as in Hartford. What changes across the state is the store you use, the house you're putting them in, and the town building department you deal with. This guide covers all three, from Fairfield County to the Hartford suburbs, with a cost table, Connecticut's contract and registration rules, and a realistic timeline.
Which IKEA store to use in Connecticut
IKEA New Haven, at 450 Sargent Drive on Long Wharf, is the only IKEA in Connecticut and the obvious store for most of it. In lower Fairfield County the New York and New Jersey stores are about as close on the map. Distances are approximate free-flow driving miles from each town center.
| Town | IKEA New Haven | Other options |
|---|---|---|
| New Haven | about 2 miles | — |
| Hamden, Milford | 8–10 miles | — |
| Stratford, Shelton | about 15 miles | — |
| Bridgeport, Trumbull | 20–21 miles | — |
| Fairfield | about 25 miles | — |
| Westport | about 29 miles | Paramus, NJ, roughly 49–55 |
| Norwalk | about 33 miles | Paramus, NJ, roughly 49–55 |
| Danbury | about 37 miles | Paramus, NJ, 65+ |
| Darien | about 38 miles | — |
| Hartford | about 38 miles | Stoughton, MA, 100+ |
| West Hartford | about 40 miles | — |
| Stamford | about 41 miles | Paramus 43, Brooklyn 44, Long Island 46 |
| Greenwich | about 46 miles | Paramus 37, Brooklyn 40, Long Island 41 |
Three things tip the Greenwich and Stamford decision toward New Haven anyway: the routes into New York and New Jersey cross tolled bridges and heavy city traffic, IKEA Paramus is closed on Sundays, and New Haven is a straight run up I-95. IKEA delivers the kitchen either way, so choose the store you would actually drive to for a return or a forgotten hinge pack.
Two practical notes. IKEA New Haven's Kitchen Services team does measuring, planning and plan checks by appointment, which is worth booking if you are starting from nothing. And if you collect extras in a rented truck, stay off the Merritt Parkway, which bans rental and box trucks; use I-95 or US-7.
What an IKEA kitchen remodel costs in Connecticut
These are 2026 numbers for a 10x10 kitchen of about 20 cabinets.
| Line item | Value | Mid-range | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| IKEA cabinets, doors and drawers | $2,500–$3,500 | $3,500–$5,000 | $5,000–$6,500 |
| Countertop, about 30 sq ft | Laminate $400–$900 or butcher block $600–$1,400 | Quartz $2,000–$3,500 | Premium quartz $3,000–$3,500+ |
| Assembly and installation, about 20 cabinets | $2,500–$3,200 | $3,200–$4,000 | $4,000–$4,500 |
| Countertop templating and installation | Cut and fitted on site with the job | $500–$1,000 | $500–$1,000 |
| Removing the old kitchen, haul-away included | DIY | $500–$1,000 | $1,000–$1,500 |
| Trim, scribing or a soffit | $0–$300 | $300–$800 | $600–$2,000 |
| Appliance installation | DIY | $300–$800 (2 units) | $600–$1,600 (4 units) |
| Backsplash installation (tile extra) | DIY | $600–$1,200 | $1,200–$1,800 |
| Typical all-in, before appliances | $7,000–$10,000 | $11,000–$16,000 | $17,000–$24,000 |
Where your job lands depends on what is in the plan and what the house is hiding:
- Bigger Fairfield County plans carry more tall pantry units ($75–$150 extra each), islands ($300–$1,200 extra), corner units ($100–$200 extra) and long runs on old floors that need shimming. The zip code doesn't raise the rate; the plan does.
- Condo towers in Stamford shorten the working day: freight-elevator windows, hallway protection and an afternoon hard stop. Flat drywall and level floors in newer buildings pull labor toward the low end.
- 1950s and '60s houses in Norwalk and Westport often have soffits that come down, or go back up to hide a duct, which is $600–$2,000 of soffit work.
- Two- and three-family houses in Bridgeport, New Haven and Hartford mean stairs, plaster and settled floors, which push toward the top of the per-cabinet range.

Connecticut paperwork: registration, contracts and lead
Registration. Connecticut requires home improvement contractors to register with the Department of Consumer Protection, and cabinet installation counts as home improvement. You can check any contractor at elicense.ct.gov.
The contract. Connecticut's Home Improvement Act requires a written contract signed by both parties, with the contractor's name, address and registration number, the entire agreement, start and completion dates, and notice of your cancellation rights. A contractor who skips those terms may have trouble enforcing the contract. The state also runs a Home Improvement Guaranty Fund for homeowners with unpaid judgments against registered contractors, subject to caps and conditions. Our guide to verifying an installer in MA, CT and RI walks through the lookup.
Lead paint. In a house built before 1978, taking out painted cabinets, trim and plaster disturbs paint that may contain lead. Federal rules require that work to be done lead-safe by a certified renovation firm, which adds containment and cleanup to the removal line. Ask for it as its own line on the quote.
Licensed trades. Plumbing, wiring and gas lines belong to licensed contractors, and in Connecticut only licensed contractors can obtain those trade permits. We build and hang the cabinets, cut the openings the trades need and schedule around them.
Town permits: from Greenwich to West Hartford
Connecticut's building code lists cabinets and countertops as finish work, so a same-layout cabinet swap often needs no building permit. Towns read that differently, though, so always ask before demolition.
- Greenwich. The Building Inspection Division publishes a list of work exempt from building or trade permits that includes "cabinets, countertops and similar finish work not involving structural changes." When a permit is needed, plan on filing in person.
- Stamford. The Building Department, on the 7th floor of the Government Center, says ordinary repairs need no permit, and a cabinet swap in the same layout usually falls there. Confirm through its online portal.
- Darien. Stricter on paper: its Building Department lists "renovating a kitchen" and "doing interior alterations" among work that requires a permit. Call before you start.
- Norwalk. Start with Planning and Zoning, which lists interior modifications among work needing a zoning permit, then Building & Code Enforcement at 125 East Avenue, where building permits are by appointment. If your house sits in Norwalk's Flood Hazard Zone Overlay, tell zoning about the kitchen early.
- Westport. The Building Department takes applications through Accela. In a flood zone, ask it the same question.
- West Hartford. Its rule is broad: a building permit is required for any new construction, alteration or repair of an existing building, and the town publishes no exempt list. Applications go only through its CityView portal. Get the answer for your job in writing.
Moving a sink, range, gas line, window or wall needs permits everywhere. Historic district commissions, such as West Hartford's for Buena Vista, Boulevard–Raymond Road and West Hill, review only exterior changes visible from the street; the kitchen inside is outside their review, but a new window or a range-hood vent cap may not be.

A grey island and a perimeter run leveled on a protected subfloor, ready for the countertop template. Stone fabricators template at this point and usually need one to two weeks.
Fairfield County, town by town
Greenwich
Older Greenwich houses bring plaster, settled floors and tall rooms, and the plans are often large: pantry walls, islands, panel-ready appliances and sometimes custom fronts on IKEA boxes. Stacking uppers to a tall ceiling and scribing long runs add hours. See IKEA kitchen installers in Greenwich and our guide to custom doors for IKEA cabinets.
Stamford and Darien
Downtown and South End condo towers mean insurance certificates, freight elevators and quiet hours. Darien's houses are mostly mid-century; the Census puts the median build year at 1956, and 27% of homes went up before 1940, so pulling the old cabinets tends to reveal patched plaster and floors leveled only where the old boxes sat. See Stamford and Darien.
Norwalk and Westport
Many kitchens here sit in 1950s and '60s houses: small rooms with a wall beside them that often comes out. Close to the Sound, humidity matters more than salt: keep delivered boxes in a dry, conditioned room for a few days before installation, and seal butcher block on all sides. See Norwalk and Westport and the New England weather guide.
Fairfield, Bridgeport, Trumbull, Stratford and Shelton
This is the part of Fairfield County nearest IKEA New Haven, 15 to 25 miles away, close enough that a trip for a missing part fits in a morning. Bridgeport's two- and three-families mean stairs and stacked kitchens; Fairfield's colonials and Southport houses mean bigger plans; postwar houses in Trumbull, Stratford and Shelton are the most straightforward. Five towns, five building departments. See Fairfield and Bridgeport.
Danbury and Newtown
IKEA New Haven is 37 miles from Danbury and IKEA Paramus 65 or more, so most people plan online or book New Haven's Kitchen Services, then let IKEA deliver. Newtown houses often carry islands and long runs; in winter, keep a long or steep driveway plowed for the delivery truck. See Danbury and Newtown.

Our guide to IKEA kitchen styles for Connecticut colonials covers door choices for traditional houses.
New Haven, the shoreline and Greater Hartford
New Haven and the shoreline. IKEA New Haven is about 2 miles from City Hall, 8 from Hamden and 10 from Milford. Two- and three-family houses with plaster and settled floors are common, and there are ten building departments between Old Saybrook and Waterbury, each with its own habits. Second homes from Milford to Old Saybrook add a scheduling question: who receives the delivery. See IKEA kitchen installation in New Haven.
Hartford and the suburbs. There is no IKEA in the Hartford area; New Haven is about 38 miles down I-91 and IKEA Stoughton roughly 100 miles or more. Hartford's six-family flats mean upper-floor carries, so book an in-home delivery option and ask IKEA how stairs are handled. Rental units add registration, contract and lead-safe questions for owners. See Greater Hartford and West Hartford, Simsbury and Torrington.
How long a Connecticut remodel takes
- Plan review and itemized price: within 3 business hours of receiving the IKEA Planner PDF, the item list and a few photos.
- Permits, if any: ask your town before demolition, especially in Darien, Norwalk and West Hartford.
- IKEA delivery: kitchen-size orders over 500 lb get in-home delivery only, into one room, with an adult at home. We start after the delivery window.
- Removal: about a day, longer when the work has to be lead-safe.
- Installation: one to two days for a galley, three to four for a typical L or U, five to seven for a large kitchen with an island and a pantry wall.
- Countertops: laminate and butcher block are cut on site the same week; quartz and granite are templated after the cabinets are set and take one to two weeks.
- Backsplash and appliance hookups follow the countertop, with gas, water and wiring connected by licensed trades.
With a stone countertop, plan on two to three weeks without a usable counter. With laminate or butcher block, the kitchen can be working within about a week of removal.

Frequently asked questions
In 2026, a mid-range 10x10 IKEA kitchen in Connecticut with quartz countertops and professional installation usually costs $11,000–$16,000 before appliances. Value builds start around $7,000 and premium builds reach about $24,000. Installation labor is $125–$225 per cabinet, about $2,500–$4,500 for a 20-cabinet kitchen.
On the map, IKEA Paramus in New Jersey is slightly closer to Greenwich (about 37 miles) than IKEA New Haven (about 46). From Stamford it is close to a tie, about 41 miles to New Haven and 43 to Paramus. The New York and New Jersey routes cross tolled bridges and city traffic, and Paramus is closed Sundays, so many people still use New Haven.
The state building code treats cabinets and countertops as finish work, so a same-layout swap often needs no building permit. Towns differ: Greenwich lists cabinets as exempt, while Darien lists renovating a kitchen as permit work and West Hartford requires a permit for any alteration or repair. Moving plumbing, gas, electrical or walls needs permits everywhere.
Yes. Connecticut requires home improvement contractors, including cabinet installers, to register with the Department of Consumer Protection. You can look them up at elicense.ct.gov. The Home Improvement Act also requires a written contract with the registration number, start and completion dates and notice of your cancellation rights.
No. The Merritt Parkway bans rental and box trucks. If you collect extra items from IKEA New Haven in a rented truck, use I-95 or US-7 instead. For the kitchen itself, IKEA's delivery is the practical option.
Removal takes about a day and cabinet installation one to two days for a galley or three to four for a typical L- or U-shaped kitchen. Stone countertops are templated after the cabinets are set and take one to two weeks to fabricate, so plan on two to three weeks without a usable counter. Laminate or butcher block shortens that to about a week.
