IKEA Kitchen Soft-Close Doors and Drawers: Setup and Troubleshooting
Soft-close mechanisms are one of those small upgrades that make a huge daily difference. No more slamming cabinet doors and drawers — everything closes gently and quietly on its own. In an open floor plan where kitchen noise carries into the living area, soft-close is practically essential.
IKEA has integrated soft-close into the SEKTION system through their UTRUSTA hardware line. Here's everything you need to know about setting it up and keeping it working.
How IKEA Soft-Close Mechanisms Work
Door Hinges (UTRUSTA)
IKEA's soft-close door hinges have a built-in hydraulic damper. When you push the door to close it, the damper activates in the last few inches of travel, slowing the door to a gentle, silent close.
The hinges are concealed (European-style) hinges with three-axis adjustment:
- In/out: Adjusts how close the door sits to the cabinet frame
- Up/down: Adjusts the vertical position of the door
- Side-to-side: Adjusts the horizontal position
Each hinge has a small adjustment screw for each axis, accessible with a Phillips screwdriver.
Drawer Runners (MAXIMERA)
IKEA's MAXIMERA drawers use full-extension ball-bearing runners with built-in soft-close damping. The damper is integrated into the runner mechanism — there's no separate soft-close component to install.
MAXIMERA drawers also have a self-closing feature: when pushed to within about 2 inches of closed, the mechanism gently pulls the drawer the rest of the way.
Push-to-Open (UTRUSTA)
For handleless door designs (like VOXTORP), IKEA offers push-to-open mechanisms that can be combined with soft-close. You push the door to open it, and when you push it closed, the soft-close engages. These use a spring-loaded catch that releases with a push.
Which IKEA Lines Include Soft-Close
Included Standard
- UTRUSTA hinges: Soft-close is standard on UTRUSTA 153-degree hinges (the most common type) for SEKTION cabinets
- MAXIMERA drawers: All MAXIMERA full-extension drawers include soft-close
- UTRUSTA pull-out shelves: Include soft-close
Add-On Options
- UTRUSTA soft-close adapters: If you have older IKEA hinges without built-in soft-close, IKEA sells clip-on dampers that add soft-close functionality
- UTRUSTA push-to-open mechanisms: Sold separately for handleless designs
Not Available
- UTRUSTA 110-degree hinges: These basic hinges may not include soft-close (check the specific product — IKEA has been transitioning to all soft-close)
- Non-IKEA drawers: If you use non-MAXIMERA drawer systems, they won't have IKEA's soft-close
How to Add Soft-Close to Existing IKEA Cabinets
If you have older IKEA cabinets (AKURUM or early SEKTION) without soft-close, there are several upgrade options:
Option 1: Replace the Hinges
Buy UTRUSTA soft-close hinges and replace the existing hinges. This is the cleanest solution:
- Open the cabinet door
- Unscrew the existing hinge from the cabinet side panel (two screws per hinge)
- Remove the hinge plate from the door (may be a clip-on or screw-mounted plate)
- Install the new UTRUSTA hinge plate on the door
- Clip the new hinge onto the plate and screw it into the cabinet side panel
- Adjust as needed
Time per door: 5-10 minutes
Cost: About $5-$8 per hinge (each door typically has 2 hinges)
Option 2: Add Clip-On Dampers
IKEA sells UTRUSTA soft-close clip-on dampers that attach to the hinge arm:
- Open the door fully
- Clip the damper onto the existing hinge arm
- Close the door to test
Time per door: 1-2 minutes
Cost: About $3-$5 per damper (one per door is usually sufficient)
Option 3: Third-Party Soft-Close Adapters
If you can't find IKEA's clip-on dampers, third-party options (like BlumMotion adapters) work with most European-style hinges:
- Surface-mount dampers that attach inside the cabinet with adhesive or screws
- Clip-on dampers compatible with most 35mm cup hinges
Adjusting Soft-Close Tension
Door Hinge Adjustment
If doors are closing too slowly, too quickly, or not fully closing:
Too slow (door stops before fully closing):
- Check that nothing is obstructing the hinge movement
- Clean the hinge mechanism — grease buildup can slow the damper
- The hinge may be set too tight — adjust the in/out screw to give the door slightly more clearance
Too fast (slamming despite soft-close):
- Make sure the soft-close mechanism is actually engaged (on some hinges, the damper can be switched on/off)
- Check that the door isn't too heavy for the hinge rating — very large or heavy doors may need higher-rated hinges
- The damper may have failed — replace the hinge
Door doesn't close fully:
- This is the most common issue. The door closes 90% and then stops.
- Adjust the depth screw (in/out adjustment) — turning it usually moves the door further in or out. Find the sweet spot where the soft-close has enough momentum to pull the door fully closed.
- Make sure adjacent doors aren't interfering with each other
- Check that the door isn't binding on the cabinet frame
Drawer Runner Adjustment
MAXIMERA drawers are adjusted differently:
Drawer doesn't close fully:
- Pull the drawer out completely
- Check the runners for debris or obstruction
- The front panel may be slightly misaligned — loosen the front panel adjustment screws, align the panel, and retighten
Drawer is loose or wobbly:
- Tighten the runner mounting screws
- Check that the rear bracket is properly engaged
- The drawer box may have loosened at the joints — tighten the assembly screws
Drawer makes grinding noise:
- Likely debris in the runner mechanism — pull the drawer out completely, clean the runners, and apply a small amount of silicone spray lubricant (not WD-40)
Troubleshooting Common Problems
Problem: Door Springs Open After Closing
Cause: The magnetic catch or soft-close mechanism is pushing the door back open instead of holding it closed.
Fix: Adjust the depth screw on the hinge. The door may be set too close to the cabinet, creating bounce-back. Moving the door out slightly (just a turn or two on the screw) usually resolves this.
Problem: Soft-Close Stopped Working on One Door
Cause: The hydraulic damper in the hinge has failed.
Fix: Replace the hinge. UTRUSTA hinges are inexpensive and swap out in under 10 minutes.
Problem: Doors Are Not Aligned (Uneven Gaps)
Cause: Hinges need adjustment after installation settling.
Fix: Use the three adjustment screws on each hinge:
- Side-to-side: The front screw on the hinge arm. Turning it moves the door left or right.
- Up/down: The screw on the mounting plate. Loosening it allows you to slide the door up or down.
- In/out: The rear screw on the hinge arm. Adjusts how close the door sits to the cabinet face.
Adjust one door at a time, working from a reference point (usually a center door or one that's already correct).
Problem: MAXIMERA Drawer Won't Stay on Track
Cause: The drawer has been pulled out past its stop point, or the rear bracket has disconnected.
Fix: Remove the drawer completely (lift the front while pulling out — the locking tabs will disengage). Check that both runners are clean and undamaged. Reinsert the drawer by aligning the rear brackets with the runner channels and pushing firmly until the front locks engage.
Problem: Push-to-Open Doesn't Release
Cause: The push-to-open mechanism needs adjustment or has failed.
Fix: Adjust the strike position — the mechanism needs to align precisely with the door to work. If adjustment doesn't help, replace the push-to-open fitting.
Maintenance Tips
Soft-close mechanisms are largely maintenance-free, but a little care extends their life:
- Clean hinges annually: Wipe down with a damp cloth to remove grease and dust
- Don't slam doors even though they have soft-close — the mechanisms have a rated lifespan, and frequent hard slams shorten it
- Keep drawer runners clean: Hair, crumbs, and small objects can get into the mechanism
- Check screws annually: Vibration from daily use can gradually loosen mounting screws. A quick tightening once a year prevents issues.
- Lubricate sparingly: If runners feel stiff, a tiny amount of silicone spray lubricant helps. Don't over-apply.
