How IKEA Kitchen Delivery Works: Scheduling, Costs, and What to Expect
A full IKEA kitchen order is a LOT of boxes. A medium kitchen might arrive in 40-60+ separate packages — flat-packed cabinet frames, doors, drawers, hardware, legs, hinges, and all the interior fittings. Getting all of this delivered, checked, and stored properly is a critical step that many homeowners underestimate.
Here's everything you need to know about IKEA kitchen delivery.
Delivery Options and Costs
Standard IKEA Delivery
- Cost: Typically $49-$149 depending on order size and distance from the store
- Timeframe: Usually scheduled 3-7 days after ordering, depending on availability
- What's included: Delivery to your home, carried to your front door or garage (ground-level delivery only in most cases)
- What's NOT included: Carrying boxes upstairs, into the house, or to a specific room. The delivery crew drops everything at the nearest accessible ground-level spot.
Self-Pickup
- Cost: Free (just your gas and vehicle)
- Requirements: A large vehicle — an SUV, minivan, or pickup truck for a small kitchen. A full-size van or truck (or multiple trips) for a medium or large kitchen.
- Advantages: You can check items in the store, you control timing, no delivery scheduling uncertainty
- Disadvantages: A full kitchen is HEAVY and takes significant vehicle space. Multiple trips may be needed.
New England IKEA locations for self-pickup:
- IKEA Stoughton, MA (off Route 24, south of Boston)
- IKEA New Haven, CT (on Sargent Drive)
Both locations have large loading areas for kitchen orders. Call ahead to make sure your items are ready for pickup if you ordered online.
Third-Party Delivery
Some people use third-party delivery services (TaskRabbit, which is now owned by IKEA, or local moving companies) to pick up from IKEA and deliver to their home. This can be cost-effective for larger orders, especially if you need the boxes carried inside and upstairs.
How to Prepare for Delivery Day
Clear a Space
Those 40-60 boxes need somewhere to go. Clear out a room — ideally not the kitchen itself, since demolition and installation will be happening there. A garage, basement, or spare bedroom works well.
Space needed: Roughly the size of a parking space for a small kitchen, up to a full garage bay for a large kitchen.
Plan for the Weight
IKEA kitchen boxes are heavy. Individual cabinet frames weigh 30-60+ pounds each. The total weight of a medium kitchen order can be 1,000-2,000 pounds. Make sure your storage area can handle this, and have help available for moving boxes.
Be Home (or Have Someone Home)
IKEA delivery requires a signature. Someone 18 or older must be present. The delivery window is typically a 4-hour block, and you'll get a notification (email or text) with a more specific time estimate on delivery day.
Have Your Order List Ready
Print out your complete order list before delivery day. You'll need it to check every item against what arrives. This is critical and should not be skipped.
Checking Your Delivery for Completeness
This is the single most important thing you can do on delivery day. Here's the process:
Step 1: Count Boxes
Before the delivery crew leaves, count the total number of boxes/packages and compare against the number on the delivery manifest. If the count doesn't match, note it on the delivery receipt.
Step 2: Check for Visible Damage
While the delivery crew is still there, inspect all boxes for:
- Crushed corners
- Water damage or staining
- Torn packaging
- Any box that rattles when it shouldn't
Photograph any damaged packaging immediately. Note it on the delivery receipt.
Step 3: Detailed Inventory (Within 48 Hours)
Within the next day or two, open every box and check:
- Article number matches your order list
- Quantity matches (especially for hinges, handles, and small components — these are often packed in bulk)
- Color/style is correct (check that all doors are the same style/color)
- No hidden damage — examine cabinet panels, door faces, and edges for chips, scratches, or cracks
Step 4: Organize Your Inventory
As you check items, organize them by cabinet number (label each SEKTION box with the cabinet position number from your plan). This saves hours during installation.
What to Do About Missing or Damaged Items
Report Immediately
Contact IKEA within 48 hours of delivery for any missing or damaged items:
- Phone: 1-888-888-4532
- In-store: Visit the returns/exchanges desk with photos and your order information
- Online: Through your IKEA account order history
IKEA's Response
- Missing items: IKEA will ship replacement items, usually within 3-7 business days. If the item is in stock at your local store, picking it up is faster.
- Damaged items: IKEA will arrange a replacement delivery or offer a store credit. You'll need to return the damaged item (or they'll pick it up).
Impact on Your Timeline
Missing or damaged items can delay your project. This is why we recommend:
- Ordering 10-15% extra of consumables (fillers, trim, toe kicks)
- Checking your delivery immediately rather than waiting until installation day
- Scheduling installation at least 1 week after delivery to give yourself time to resolve issues
Tips for New England IKEA Deliveries
Winter Deliveries
If your kitchen is being delivered during New England winter (November through March):
- Make sure your driveway and path to the delivery point are cleared of snow and ice
- Delivery crews may refuse to deliver if conditions are unsafe
- Protect boxes from moisture — even brief exposure to snow or rain can damage cardboard, and moisture can swell particleboard
Multi-Story Homes
Many New England homes are multi-story. IKEA delivery is ground level only. If your kitchen is on the second or third floor, you'll need to carry everything upstairs yourself or hire help.
Narrow Streets and Driveways
Boston and other older New England cities have famously narrow streets. If a delivery truck can't access your driveway or park near your home, the delivery crew may call to rearrange or may leave items at the nearest accessible point (like the end of your driveway).
Apartment and Condo Deliveries
If you live in an apartment or condo:
- Notify building management about the delivery
- Reserve the freight elevator if available
- Check if there are delivery-hour restrictions
- Have a plan for storing boxes if your unit can't hold them all at once
Self-Pickup Tips
If you opt for self-pickup at IKEA Stoughton or New Haven:
- Order online first and select store pickup. This ensures your items are pulled and ready.
- Bring help. At least two people for a small kitchen, three or more for larger orders.
- Bring straps or rope to secure boxes in your vehicle.
- Make a list of priorities. If you can't fit everything in one trip, take the items you need first (cabinet frames and the suspension rail) and come back for doors, drawers, and accessories.
- Go during off-peak hours. Weekday mornings are much less crowded than weekends.
- Bring a tape measure. Double-check the dimensions of any items you're unsure about before loading them.
Delivery vs. Self-Pickup: Which Is Better?
| Factor | Delivery | Self-Pickup |
|--------|----------|-------------|
| Cost | $49-$149 | Free (gas + vehicle) |
| Convenience | Moderate — you wait for a delivery window | Low — requires time and a large vehicle |
| Speed | 3-7 days after ordering | Same day if in stock |
| Damage risk | Higher (items handled by more people) | Lower (you control handling) |
| Completeness | Must check carefully at delivery | You verify in-store |
| Heavy lifting | Delivered to ground level | You load and unload |
Our recommendation: For a full kitchen, delivery is usually worth the cost. The volume and weight of a full kitchen order makes self-pickup impractical for most people unless you have a large vehicle and strong helpers. But if your kitchen is small or you want to be 100% sure about item completeness, self-pickup lets you verify everything in the store.
