IKEA Kitchen Island Ideas: Build, Buy, or Hack Your Perfect Island

Dreaming of a kitchen island? We cover every approach — building a custom island from IKEA SEKTION cabinets, buying a freestanding unit, or hacking together something unique. Plus sizing, plumbing, and electrical considerations.

IKEA Kitchen Island Ideas: Build, Buy, or Hack Your Perfect Island

A kitchen island transforms how you use your kitchen. It adds counter space, storage, seating, and a natural gathering point. And with IKEA's SEKTION system, building a kitchen island is more affordable than you might think.

At Hearthstone Kitchens, we build and install IKEA-based kitchen islands every week across Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. Here's everything you need to know about your options.

Option 1: Build a Custom Island from IKEA SEKTION Cabinets

This is our most popular approach — and usually the best value. You use standard IKEA SEKTION base cabinets arranged back-to-back or side-by-side and top them with a countertop. The result looks custom and integrates perfectly with the rest of your IKEA kitchen.

How It Works

  • Choose your island size based on your kitchen dimensions and needs
  • Select base cabinets — typically two rows of cabinets placed back-to-back
  • Connect the cabinets together and to a plywood base or directly to the floor
  • Add cover panels to all exposed sides (matching your door style)
  • Install the countertop — can overhang for seating on one side
  • Add plumbing and/or electrical if needed (sink, dishwasher, outlets)

Cabinet Configurations

Small island (24" x 48"):

  • Two 24-inch base cabinets back-to-back
  • Good for: Prep space, some storage, possible two-stool seating on one end
  • Cost for IKEA components: $400-$700

Medium island (24" x 72" or 36" x 60"):

  • Three 24-inch base cabinets in a row, possibly with a second row behind
  • Good for: Generous prep space, substantial storage, three-stool seating
  • Cost for IKEA components: $600-$1,200

Large island (36" x 96" or larger):

  • Four or more base cabinets per side, back-to-back rows
  • Good for: Sink or cooktop integration, extensive storage, four-plus-stool seating, statement piece
  • Cost for IKEA components: $800-$1,800

Cover Panels Are Essential

Every exposed cabinet side on an island needs a cover panel or end panel in your chosen door style. For a back-to-back island, you'll need panels on:

  • Both short ends
  • The back side (the side without doors/drawers)
  • Possibly the front too if using a different style

Budget $200-$500 for cover panels on a medium island.

Waterfall Countertop Options

A waterfall countertop — where the countertop material extends down the side(s) of the island — creates a dramatic, high-end look. This works with any countertop material but is most commonly done in quartz or butcher block.

  • Quartz waterfall: Add $500-$1,500 to your countertop cost (per waterfall side)
  • Butcher block waterfall: More affordable but requires careful joinery

Option 2: IKEA Freestanding Islands and Carts

If you don't want a permanent built-in island, IKEA offers several freestanding options:

VADHOLMA Kitchen Island

  • Freestanding island with storage shelves and a solid wood top
  • Available in black/oak
  • No assembly with SEKTION required
  • Good for kitchens where you want flexibility to move the island

TORNVIKEN Kitchen Island

  • Compact freestanding island with a shelf and drawer
  • Lighter weight, more movable
  • Works well in smaller kitchens

Rolling Carts (STENSTORP, BEKVÄM, etc.)

  • Smallest option — great for truly tiny kitchens
  • Can be rolled out of the way when not needed
  • Typically $100-$300

Pros of freestanding: Affordable, flexible, easy to remove if needed, no installation required

Cons of freestanding: Less storage than SEKTION-based, can't integrate plumbing or electrical, may look less custom, not as sturdy as built-in

Option 3: IKEA Hacks

The IKEA hacking community has created some brilliant kitchen island solutions:

KALLAX Island Hack

Turn two KALLAX 2x4 shelf units placed back-to-back into an island base. Add legs or casters, a countertop on top, and storage baskets in the cubbies. Cost: approximately $300-$500 total.

ALEX Desk Drawers Island

Two ALEX drawer units as the base, with a butcher block or stone top spanning them. The drawers provide excellent organized storage. Cost: approximately $400-$700 total.

SEKTION + Contrasting Door Style

Use SEKTION cabinets for the island but choose a different door style than your perimeter cabinets. This creates a furniture-like look where the island is a distinct piece. Very popular in farmhouse and transitional kitchens.

Electrical and Plumbing Considerations

Adding Outlets to Your Island

Kitchen islands increasingly need electrical outlets — for charging devices, plugging in small appliances, or powering a mixer or blender. Current electrical code requires outlets on kitchen islands in most cases.

Options for island outlets:

  • Pop-up outlets that are flush with the countertop when not in use
  • Outlets in the side panel of the island (the standard approach)
  • Outlets in the toe kick area (less visible)

Running electrical to an island requires routing wire through the floor, which typically means going through the basement or crawl space. In slab-on-grade homes, this can be more complicated. A licensed electrician in Massachusetts, Connecticut, or Rhode Island will charge $300-$800 for island electrical work.

Adding a Sink to Your Island

A sink in the island frees up perimeter counter space and creates a great work flow. But it adds complexity:

  • Water supply lines must be routed to the island through the floor
  • A drain line must run through the floor and connect to the main drain (this may require a slope that limits routing options)
  • A vent is required for the drain — either a traditional vent through the roof or an air admittance valve (AAV), depending on local code
  • Cost: $1,000-$3,000 for island plumbing in New England

The plumbing work needs to be done before the island cabinets are installed and before the floor is finished. Plan early and coordinate with your plumber. See our kitchen plumbing guide for more details.

Adding a Dishwasher to Your Island

Some homeowners place the dishwasher in the island, either next to the island sink or connected to the perimeter sink via longer drain and supply hoses. This works but adds to the plumbing complexity and cost.

Size Guidelines

Minimum Kitchen Size for an Island

Your kitchen should have at least 12 feet x 12 feet of floor space to accommodate an island comfortably. This allows for 42 inches of clearance on all sides (the minimum for walkways around an island).

Clearance Requirements

  • Minimum walkway around the island: 42 inches (36 inches absolute minimum, but it'll feel tight)
  • Preferred walkway with appliance clearance: 48 inches (allows someone to walk past an open dishwasher or oven)
  • Seating clearance: The overhang for bar stools should be 12-15 inches deep and 24 inches wide per stool

Standard Island Heights

  • Standard counter height: 36 inches (matches standard base cabinet + countertop height)
  • Bar height: 42 inches (requires bar-height stools, can be achieved by adding a raised section)
  • Two-level island: 36-inch prep side with a 42-inch bar-height seating side — very popular and functional

Seating Integration

Adding seating to your island is one of its best features. Here's how to plan it:

Countertop Overhang for Seating

  • 12-inch overhang: Minimum for comfortable seating
  • 15-inch overhang: Ideal — provides knee space without excessive cantilever
  • Overhang support: Overhangs beyond 10-12 inches need brackets or corbels. Stone fabricators will advise on maximum unsupported span for your specific material.

Stools Per Side

  • 24 inches per stool for counter-height seating
  • 22 inches per stool for bar-height seating (bar stools are typically narrower)
  • A 6-foot island can seat 3 stools comfortably on the long side

Choosing Between Counter Height and Bar Height

  • Counter height (36"): More versatile, kids can use regular chairs, feels more casual and connected
  • Bar height (42"): Creates visual separation, can hide kitchen mess from the living area (great for open floor plans), creates a more social bar-like atmosphere

Design Tips

Make the Island a Focal Point

Your island is the centerpiece of your kitchen. Consider:

  • A contrasting door style or color from the perimeter cabinets (dark island with light perimeter, or vice versa)
  • A dramatic countertop material (butcher block island with quartz perimeter, or marble island with quartz perimeter)
  • Statement pendant lighting above the island (typically 2-3 pendants for a medium island)

Storage Optimization

Plan what goes in the island strategically:

  • Sink side: Cleaning supplies below, dish storage nearby
  • Seating side: Store place settings, napkins, and serving items
  • Open shelving on one end: Display cookbooks, decorative items, or wine storage

Don't Forget the Toe Kick

Island toe kicks need to wrap around all four sides. Order enough FORBATTRA toe kick material.
